Physio or Kinesiology tape or (K-tape) is often seen on tv sporting fixtures. It has been in use for over a decade now but what is it for and does it help? For those who haven’t seen it on tv, it is brightly coloured adhesive tape that is put over muscles or joints. With the right application, the tape sticks well to the skin and can last for days. It is widely available and can be found on amazon here: https://shorturl.at/dFGJV

Whilst the manufactures of the tape will give numerous potential benefits https://kinesiotaping.com/about/what-is-the-kinesio-taping-method/, in my experience it has 2 main positive effects.

  1. Pain reduction
  2. Feeling of reinforcement/increased stability around muscle/joint

Physio tape can be used for a range of tendon problems such as tennis elbow, golfers elbow, jumpers knee, achilles tendinopathy. For ligament problems it can be used on Knee ligaments such as the medial collateral ligament or lateral collateral ligaments, or ankle ligaments which normally get sprained. Additionally physio tape can be used on shoulder conditions such as an impingement, bursitis, joint sprains, rotator cuff tears.

However whilst taping may help with short term pain relief or adding stability at a muscle, tendon or joint. It also imperative to address the underlying issue/s with a thorough assessment of the injured area and a prescribed individualised exercise programme. These exercise programmes will address the area which the tape is supported by strengthening, lengthening or stabilising the muscle, tendon or joint that has been painful. The Physio Academy Chelmsford provides all of it’s patients with an online accessible programme, which has videos, pictures and great  descriptions of the exercises.
